What is Jickoby About?
Jickoby is about sharing the love and experiences of role-playing games with the universe.
The name Jickoby is from a long time ago when I was quickly coming up with a name, I don’t remember if it was for a game or if I was just goofing with friends. Jick Jickoby is what emerged. Over time I Jickoby started to feel like the name of a happy-go-lucky halfling who always had some sort of mischief brewing just behind the smirk on his face. Sometimes in my mind, and occasionally in my games, he’s a rogue, sometimes a swashbuckler, sometimes a shopkeep, a bartender, or a bard.
Similar to that halfling, I’m often thinking about how I might spice up games that I’m running or playing with my friends. New NPCs, interesting encounters, plots, schemes, treasures, etc. Jickoby is an outlet for me to share those ideas with you, get your feedback, and see if we can up our game together.
Origin Story
The origin of Jickoby started way back in 1986 when my stepbrother and one of our neighbors introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons during one of his summer visits to stay with my family. We lived on the edge of nowhere in a small Michigan town, there was no cable television and video games were little more than a couple of blocks moving around on a screen so pastimes weren’t as abundant as they are in today’s world. Back then my days typically consisted of running around in the woods with my younger brother, building forts, fighting with sticks, or digging holes.
Then, that one summer I was introduced to D&D and I was HOOKED. I played a dwarf and over the course of the summer, my hammer gained the magical ability to return to my hand as I threw it around the battlefield. In the physical realm, our guest room floor was soon covered with graph paper, hand-written character sheets, and soda cans.
Flash forward a whole bunch of years and now I have hard drives filled with maps, bookshelves filled with books, large containers filled with dice, 3d printed terrain, and minis … It’s a lot and I love it. I hope some of what I love resonates with you and that you can find some ideas that boost your love of the hobby too.
